Why is Pilates so popular?
Developed by Joseph Pilates over ninety years ago, the Pilates Method is a unique body conditioning technique that trains the body and mind to work together towards the goal of complete physical fitness. By using a specifically designed series of precise, controlled, movements which require thought and concentration, Pilates re-educates, re-aligns and re-balances the body and encourages natural movement.
The Pilates method is a system of controlled exercises that engage the mind and condition of the body. It is a combination of strength and flexibility training that improves posture, minimises the risk of injury, reduces stress and creates long lean muscles.
Pilates works several different muscle groups at once, through smooth, continuous flowing movements with the focus on strengthening and stabilizing the core – abdominals, back and pelvic region.
In Pilates we concentrate on the quality of the movement rather than the quantity, which leaves you feeling refreshed rather than exhausted. Pilates takes a balanced approach so that no muscle group is overworked. You are encouraged to concentrate on how you are feeling, which promotes a true mind-body workout.
Joseph Pilates – ‘the main man’
Born in Germany, Jospeh Pilates had a sickly childhood. He developed a series of exercises to stregthen his body and improve his health, as he believed that our modern lifestyle, bad posture, breathing and inefficient breathing were the roots of poor health. He fine tuned his regime while he interned in England during the First World War, building up his fellow internees strength and general health and helping resist the flu epidemic. Following the war he returned to Germany. He developed a unique system of controlled exercises which conditioned and strengthened the body from inside out. He then moved to New York where he opened his first studio. The Pilates method gained a far wider audience in the 1990’s and with such positive results, is more than just a passing fad.
Benefits of Pilates
Pilates is beneficial for people of all ages and fitness levels.
Pilates conditions the body from the ‘inside out’, from head to toe and is suitable for all ages and abilities. It does require practice and patience, but the results are well worth it. Pilates can be a wonderful form of exercise.
- If practiced correctly, the Pilates method has tremendous benefits and can:
- improve strength and flexibility

- strengthen the deep abdominal muscles which support/hold up the core region of the body
- engage your mind and promote body and stregth awareness
